American Gothic

PHOTOGRAPHER'S JOURNAL:
Cobweb

Tightrope of time
Transforming idle barns.
Who is it that strung them there?
Who patrolled those wires
Before they got soiled and gray with age?
Before new lines were strung.

They age and gray
Until they grow plush
And the rafters are webbed,
And the joists cocooned.
Time's tightropes
Layer to downy forgetfulness.

"Belly of the Beast" and "American Gothic" both cry out for a back story. "B/B" may tell the story of interrupted work. By using the sepia tone, we can see a farmer in 2009 or 1909. You imply the back story in "A/G" by virtue of its name. The hay bales are the husband and wife. Even without the back story, both are terrific.

Thank you. The allusion of the hay bales had not occurred to me until you and Sun noted it. I do like the fact that he has set down his pitch fork. Might that be a kiss?
